Grant Program Guidelines

Program

In order to encourage continued business growth in Kansas City, KS, The Department of Economic Development offers, The Small Business Grant to support eligible, established small businesses in Kansas City, KS. This program provides financial assistance to help offset expenses that support expanded daily operations and business growth.

Strategy

The goal of the Small Business Grant is to stimulate the economic growth and attract new investment by supporting qualified small businesses that are primed for expansion. By assisting existing businesses with less than twenty-five employees, the grant strengthens small business development and enhances neighborhood vitality, fostering vibrant and resilient commercial districts. The initiative also promotes urban innovation by empowering entrepreneurs to modernize operations and adopt new strategies to build steady growth. Through coordination with other public partners, the program ensures resources are used effectively, maximizing community impact while helping businesses reach the next level of growth and long-term success. The small business grant will promote small business activity for a one-time grant to applicants who meet program requirements.


Grants up to $10,000 will be rewarded for:

• Renovation costs (sheetrock, flooring, painting, etc.)

• Façade improvements (painting, ceiling, etc.)

• Inventory costs

• Equipment costs

• Marketing (webpage, signage, etc.)

• Bars and establishments that sell alcohol with less than 50% in food sales (state and

federal license required)


The following business types are ineligible for grant funding:

• Home based businesses

• Liquor stores

• Payday loans

• Hookah and vape shops

• Bars and establishments that sell alcohol with more than 50% in food sales

• New businesses operating for less than one year
